7. Madame Talk x Thérèse

Listen to our new Madame Talk with Parisian rapper/singer Thérèse !

A musician, fashion designer and activist, Thérèse raps and sings in French, English and Chinese. French-born with Chinese, Laotian and Vietnamese origins, she grew up in Val-de-Marne and Seine-Saint-Denis, and then lived between Lyon, Barcelona, Beijing and Munich during her studies before settling in Paris.

In September 2020, she released the track “T.O.X.I.C, which talks about toxic relationships and the need to set free from their grip. Two months later, with the song “Chinoise ?“, she spoke out against everyday racism and the fetishization of Asian people.

As she just turned 35, she released her first EP called “Rêvalité”. The 7-track project, composed during the first lockdown, mixes hip hop, pop and electro with both dark and bright, introspective and yet universal lyrics.

Thérèse told us about her contradictions, her deep-rooted relationship to writing and her ambivalent vision of social networks. She also talked about the lack of representativeness of Asian women in our society and her will for common recreation and togetherness.

INFOGRAPHIC #1- How many rappers in the world?

“There is no decent female rapper”, “no woman will ever replace Diam’s…” As crazy as it may seem, in 2021, this bias against female rappers still persists, nine years after Diam’s officially retired!

As the first French media dedicated to women and LGBTQIA+ in hip hop, Madame Rap has been working since 2016 to deconstruct cliches and highlight female and LGBTQIA+ artists in rap.

With this is mind, we made an infographic called “How many female rappers in the world?” based on our online directory of female and LGBTQIA+ rappers. Regularly updated, this directory gathers international rappers who identify as female or LGBTQIA+ and released at least one track physically, online or on social networks.

With 1975 artists from 119 different countries, including 296 in France, who can still say that there are no women in hip hop?
