On this International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), Madame Rap calls on you to support LGBTQIA+ rappers around the world.
Why is that?
LGBTphobia can take the form of physical and psychological violence, as well as economic violence. As a result, LGBTQIA+ people suffer more from precarity.
More than 15% of them are among the 25% lowest incomes of the European Union.[1]
In the U.S. as well, people who identify as LGBTQIA+ experience poverty more than cisgender heterosexual individuals (22% vs. 16%).[2]
Unsurprisingly, the music and rap sectors are not spared. In the UK, 1 in 5 LGBTQIA+ artists are in debt.[3] 55% of queer musicians say that a lack of sustainable income is an obstacle to pursuing and developing their music careers, and 29% say they are unable to support themselves or their families.
As Deezer recently announced they had removed 26 million tracks from their catalog, and Spotify have just changed their royalty payment system (tracks must now have reached at least 1,000 streams in the last 12 months to be eligible for monetization), one way to support these artists is to listen to their music.
