In Germany, as in many other European countries, hip hop culture began to emerge in the 1980s. Strongly inspired by the United States, local rap gradually developed. Although female rappers remain little visible on this scene, they have been active from the start.
As early as 1995, Sabrina Setlur was rapping under the name Schwester S, and her track “Du liebst mich nicht” reached number 1 in Germany in 1997. Covered in 2015 by Shirin David, the track enabled the Hamburg rapper to reach the top 10 of the German and Austrian charts.
At the same time, the pop-rap trio Tic Tac Toe enjoyed commercial success in Eastern European and German-speaking countries. Meanwhile, Cora E. was making a name for herself as a B-girl and MC on the Heidelberg scene, before conquering the mainstream with her track “Schlüsselkind”.
To give women the place they deserve in the history of German rap, Madame Rap presents 15 female rappers you need to know, selected from the 104 German artists listed on our website.
