In the collective unconscious, rap and lesbians don’t get on well. Because rap is still perceived as LGBTphobic and sexist, being a woman and a lesbian in hip hop seems unconceivable.
And yet, when you look for lesbian artists in hip hop, you can find more than in pop, rock or electro!
Since the beginning of the 2010s and the continuous rise of queer hip hop artists (Frank Ocean, Azealia Banks, Angel Haze, Brooke Candy, Siya, Princess Nokia, Zebra Katz, Mykki Blanco, Le1f, and Young Thug to name a few), a growing number of MCs identify as lesbians.
Whether they use their sexual orientation as a political or artistic tool, here is a selection of 40 female rappers (mostly Americans but not only) who identify as lesbians.
